Sundeck, Aspen, 1956

Sundeck, Aspen, 1956

The original Sundeck at the top of Aspen Mountain, which was razed in 1999 to make way for a bigger and splashier structure. In 1946 it was operated by Howard and Jean Awrey, and in 1953 Paul and Hanna Wirth, along with their five children, moved into the building and managed it for 15 years. The Birrfelder family took over in 1968, spending the winters here and the summers in Lake Tahoe. Imagine Brigitte Birrfelder skiing to school in untracked powder every morning.

Squaw Valley, ca. 1956

Squaw Valley, ca. 1956

The World's Largest Ski Lift, installed at Squaw Mountain for the 1960 Olympic Games. Difficult to read here, but the moniker is displayed large, for all who ride on the lift to see.

Vail Valley, ca. 1967

Vail Valley, ca. 1967

Looking down at Manor Vail, in the lower left-hand corner, nestled up against Gore Creek. Interstate 70 can be seen at center left, having been completed in 1956. Manor Vail is touted as being the first hotel in Vail, opening in 1965, but The Lodge had already been open for three years prior.

Vail Valley, ca. 1967

Vail Valley, ca. 1967

Shot from Main Vail Trail, this north northeast shot of the Rockies also shows thicker aspen groves than we see today on the slope up to Bald Mountain.

Vail, ca. 1975

Vail, ca. 1975

Looking east on Gore Drive, the Tyrolian Inn on the left is now Pepi's Bar, attached to Hotel Gasthof Gramshammer.

Bridge Street, Vail, ca. 1967

Bridge Street, Vail, ca. 1967

Looking down Bridge Street, we can see the Red Lion Inn on the right, almost the same as today. The white building in back of it is in the same location as Patagonia is today, but the building has been replaced. The Tyrolian Inn, now Pepi's Bar and Hotel Gasthof Gramshammer, is the dark building in the center.

The Lodge, Vail, ca. 1967

The Lodge, Vail, ca. 1967

Note The Golden Ski bar nestled in between the buildings. Right around this time in 1967, Dexter's Dixieland Band was appearing here. The Lodge is still open, though it is unrecognizable from this image, as well as having the entire town built around it.

Silverton, 1963

Silverton, 1963

Looking south on Greene Street, we see the San Juan County Garage and Shop on the left. It's still there today. Down the street on the left, the Silverton City Hall, built in 1908, can be seen with its distinctive bell tower.

Million Dollar Highway, 1963

Million Dollar Highway, 1963

Just outside of Ouray, this view of the Million Dollar Highway looks pretty much the way it still does, since the paving project was completed in the 1920's.

Million Dollar Highway, 1963

Million Dollar Highway, 1963

This view is the exact reverse of the previous view, showing the sign for Bear Creek Falls. The Ledoux's rental car, a 1962 Galaxie 500, is a bit the worse for the weather, though a quick bath should clean it right up.

Million Dollar Highway, 1963

Million Dollar Highway, 1963

During the same pulloff, Mr. Ledoux took this picture, a fun sight for anyone not too familiar with driving in Colorado, though to locals it seems ordinary.

Aspen, 1958

Aspen, 1958

The tan warmers used by ski lift passengers can just barely be made out here. Which trail is this? Contact the show stewards with any information!

Joan, Aspen, 1958

Joan, Aspen, 1958

Louis Ledoux was married to Joan for 59 years. She is shown here on one of their many trips to Aspen. After his passing in 2001, she continued to lead the Ledoux laboratory until her death in 2015 at 102 years of age.

Aspen Valley 1958

Aspen Valley 1958

Taken from Road 15E, near the sundeck, this view shows the lack of trail development beyond Spar Gulch. The airport, opened in 1946, and Red Mountain are visible in the center.

Vistadome to Alta, 1956

Vistadome to Alta, 1956

This is believed to be the only train trip to Alta that Mr. and Mrs. LeDoux made, but the few images captured are beautiful reminders of the magic of train travel in its Golden Age in Colorado.

Winter in Aspen

Winter in Aspen

The year is unknown. but shows the wonder of fresh snowfall in Aspen, a timeless event that leaves an indelible impression upon every visitor.
